What is Day of the Dead (Dia De Los Muertos)?

Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos) is a tradition observed in many Latin American countries. The holiday focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died. It is particularly celebrated in Mexico, where it starts on October 31st at sundown and ends on November 2nd at sundown.

People celebrate by cooking special meals and candies for their deceased loved ones and visiting the gravesites of relatives to clean and decorate them. Paintings, called "ofrendas" (offerings) also commemorate ancestors; most often they include bowls filled with flowers, especially orange marigolds, and candles placed around images of the dead that are drawn on the clay-covered tombs. A cross is often drawn with a bold stroke and three dots, which represent heaven, earth and man: God, family and self.

Day of the Dead or Halloween?

If you are of the Latin American culture, you probably celebrate Day of the Dead. Does that mean you have to be Latino or Latina in order to celebrate Dia De Los Muertos? In my opinion, no. Celebrating Day of the Dead is a good way to remember loved ones and ancestors who have come before you. It is very important to remember one's ancestors because knowing where you came from and what your family members overcame is a good way to figure out who you are and get more motivation in your life.

So what about Halloween? Many people believe that Halloween is Satanic in nature and should not be celebrated at all. If this is you, then Dia De Los Muerots might be a good holiday to celebrate at the end of October instead. Or if you're like my family and choose to pick the good parts of out holidays and traditions and leave out the bad, then feel free to celebrate both!

What is a Sugar Skull?

A sugar skull is a decorated skull made from edible items, such as candy. It's made to look like a human skull and symbolizes departed souls in some Latin countries, such as Mexico. On the Day of the Dead it is believed that the gates of heaven are opened up so people can be reunited with their deceased loved ones for one day. The main thing that has become associated with Dia De Los Muertos is the sugar skull, which many people wear during the holiday for decoration.

Where did the Sugar Skull Come From?

The tradition of making skulls out of edible items to celebrate Dia De Los Muertos dates back to the Aztecs in Mexico (surprise, surprise). The skull is a reminder of the impermanent nature of life and to therefore enjoy it while one is still alive. Sugar skulls were given as gifts to dead children and babies, because they couldn't eat solid foods, so food in their afterlife was also restricted to liquids or soft breads.

In more recent years, sugar skulls have become associated with Halloween in America. You can find them for sale at your local Halloween stores, some people make their own, and they are also popular tattoo designs. Sugar skulls also make very visually attractive and engaging coloring pages. My Day of the Dead coloring book includes many free sugar skull coloring pages for your enjoyment.
